Root Canal Treatment

Understanding Root Canal Treatment.

If a tooth is damaged due to decay or trauma, extending beyond the enamel to involve the dental pulp, conservative treatments such as resin restoration or inlay may not suffice for treatment.

The process involves removing all damaged dental pulp from within the tooth, shaping the canal to resemble the form of the nerve, and completely filling the empty canal with a substitute dental pulp material extending to the root tip. This entire treatment process is collectively known as root canal therapy.

  • Root canal treatment may be necessary if:

    • Deep decay: Extensive decay reaches the dental pulp, causing infection or inflammation.

    • Trauma: Injury to the tooth can damage the pulp.

    • Cracked tooth: Cracks can expose the pulp to bacteria.

    • Repeated dental procedures: Multiple dental procedures on the same tooth can weaken the pulp.

    • Anesthesia: You will be given local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth.

    • Access to the Pulp: Your dentist will create a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the infected pulp.

    • Removal of the Pulp: The infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed from the root canals.

    • Cleaning and Shaping: The root canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped to prepare them for filling.

    • Filling the Canals: The canals are filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, to prevent reinfection.

    • Sealing the Tooth: The opening in the tooth is sealed with a dental filling or crown to protect the treated tooth.

    • Saves the natural tooth: Root canal treatment allows you to save your natural tooth instead of needing an extraction.

    • Relieves pain and discomfort: It eliminates the pain and discomfort caused by the infected pulp.

    • Restores tooth function: It allows you to continue to eat and chew normally.

    • Improves oral health: It prevents the spread of infection and maintains your overall oral health.
